Trench candles are a simple but effective tool used by many Ukrainian defenders fighting on the frontlines. They are an easily made, improvised candle which use recycled materials and offer a practical form of support for soldiers who are often in cold, dark, and difficult conditions, they provide light, heat, and a means to warm food and drinks, particularly in isolated areas or where infrastructure has been damaged.
What they are
- Made from recycled materials: These candles are usually made in empty food tins filled with corrugated cardboard for a wick and filler, and melted candle wax.
- A source of heat and light: They provide essential light in trenches and can also be used to warm up food, boil water, or dry out clothes in freezing temperatures.
- A morale booster: These small, practical items help improve the living conditions and morale of soldiers on the front lines, particularly in isolated areas or where infrastructure has been damaged.
